Our exercises have arrived at the University of Tübingen, Germany, where Fortunata Romeo is conducting a research period under the supervision of Professor Barbara Kaup, as part of her doctorate in Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics at IUSS Pavia.
This phase of the doctorate is developing an experimental project to verify the effectiveness of perception for motor learning, a fundamental principle in Neurocognitive Rehabilitation.

The doctoral research project on Language and Rehabilitation has completed the first phase of data collection and analysis on subjects without neurological conditions. This data will provide a comparison with patients to highlight differences and similarities in the language of the two groups.
Data collection on patients’ sensorimotor abilities before and after treatment with Neurocognitive Rehabilitation is also continuing, for a scientific evaluation of the treatment’s effectiveness.

The work is becoming increasingly concrete: we thank the many volunteers who are answering our interviewer’s questions, aimed at studying the language used by healthy subjects when they talk about their perception of their bodies while performing actions.

Research work on stroke patients continues as part of the TEL doctoral program “Language and Rehabilitation,” co-funded by the RNC Study Center.
At the NEP (Laboratory of Neurolinguistics and Experimental Pragmatics) of the IUSS Pavia University School of Advanced Studies, Dr. Fortunata Romeo presented her project to Professor Jeannette Littlemore, a world-renowned expert on metaphors and president of the RaAM International Association for Researching and Applying Metaphor.

Preparation of the research project for the “Language and Rehabilitation” doctoral program continues with dedication.
We are exploring the connection between motor recovery and language through the study of scientific literature, which highlights the close interrelationship between these two functional systems and how they must be considered in their interrelationship, including from a rehabilitation perspective.
Patients’ words, which we are collecting and studying through observations and interviews, will be scientifically analyzed to understand in detail how the connections between language and motor recovery should be considered in planning the therapeutic experience.

The study related to the “Language and Rehabilitation” doctoral project is laying its foundations.
Classes have begun at the IUSS in Pavia, providing the skills needed to develop a scientifically rigorous study design, while clinical observations at the Study Center concretely support the hypotheses that will be tested. An unprecedented and fruitful union between clinical research and academia.
An important new project begins in October 2023: the Doctorate in Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics on the topic of “Language and Rehabilitation.”
